kitty update It's been awhile since I put up a new picture of my kitty. She is doing quite well. I was trying to take her picture while she sat in the window, but she would have none of it. So I opened the door to come back in from the balcony, and she curiously peered out, and so i snapped a couple shots of her then. I don't really like how scary her eyes look in it, but it was golden hour, and the light was pretty direct and bright. the black speck just below her chin is just from dust on the slide, She doesn't have fleas or anything.

yesterday I finally had to buy scratch some new kitty litter. she was just about all out of the flushable stuff we'd been using before. this was partially due to her idea that it is really fun to kick all of the litter into the toilet when she is done using it, whether she really needs to or not. the heb was out of the arm and hammer flushable stuff i used to use. so bought the "fresh results" flushable litter, thinking it would be pretty much the same thing. first impressions: it smells like.....pine?? it looks like....not kitty litter. it flushes better than the arm and hammer stuff, so i think my toilet will be able to be clean again. i just gave up cleaning it after a while, because as much as i tried to keep it clean, with all of the kitty litter scratch would be kicking into it, cleaning it would just be an uphill battle on a very steep incline. anyway, i was concerned that maybe the pine smell and multicolored strangeness of the thing would put scratch off and we would have a problem when i woke up today. my concerns were ill placed, she used it admirably during the night, and once again just now. no problems. whose cat does all her business in the toilet? my cat. | | Monday, December 12th, 2005 | | 3:19 am |
today, scratch had to do the business. she peed in the toilet, like she does. and then, after her customary yelling at me for not having enough litter on the seat after she has kicked it all in the hole, she went back to the bathroom, and i heard a noise we hadn't heard yet. rather than the sharp "thack" of poop hitting thin layer of litter on thin plastic object, there was a shallow "plop". followed by several others. scratch did number 1 and 2 in the toilet today. i gave her a treat, and love. yay kitty. | | Wednesday, December 7th, 2005 | | 8:32 pm |
i let scratch use the seat with the first stage hole in it for about 2 weeks. the other day, i decided she was doing very well and that i could cut the next hole. the only accident she had had was that there was not enough litter in the thing for her taste, and she ended up going once in the bathtub. that wasn't cool. i figured that with the increased litter content again, there would be no problem. we had a serious conversation where i told her that if she went in the bathtub again, we would have a problem. sure enough, she did it. after i cleaned it up, i filled the bathtub with water, and since then, it has been filled whenever it is not in use. so i thought this might be a good idea. i was kind of concerned for awhile, thinking that if she didnt want to go where she was supposed to, and i wouldn't let her go in the bathtub, she would find fun places to use, like, under my bed, or in my kitchen, or on my couch. her first time using it since the bathtub had been filled, she decided to pee in the hole as usual, then poop on the mat which used to be for stopping the tracking of kitty litter from the litter box. well, about an hour ago, she went where she was supposed to, right next to the hole. i was very proud of her for ceasing the whole "i am going to be like the rolling stones" thing where she would just defecate wherever she wanted to. i pet her a lot and encouraged this behavior as best as i could. i went and got her 2 different treats, took her back to the bathroom so that hopefully she'd put 2 and 2 together, pet her and said nice things and gave her the treats. i didn't update for a while because of the complications, but now it seems that she is back on the right track. i should also note that when cutting the second hole, it kind of tore into the third ring quite a bit. i am not very happy about that, but it doesn't seem to have that much of an adverse effect overall. i guess. | | Saturday, November 26th, 2005 | | 5:38 am |
today, i got back from visiting family for thanksgiving. i was very concerned because i had just cut scratch's first hole in the toilet seat just before i left town here. i was gone from wednesday evening until friday evening. upon arriving back at my apartment, i was overjoyed to discover that scratch had not left me any surprise gifts anywhere in the apartment. further, upon checking for use of the toilet, she had a little bit of kitty poo in the litter zone, and had apparently figured out, rather quickly, the concept of using the hole in the center to either "cover up" or to avoid covering altogether. or so it would seem. i had to flush it a couple times, she had kicked quite a bit of litter into the toilet. however, there was a distinct lack of clumped urine in the litter zone. the reason for this was confirmed when later on, i was sitting in my room at my computer and i heard a quiet tinkling from the other room. my beloved kitty has already figured out that peeing in the hole in the seat is totally pipe. <3 | | Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005 | | 6:27 am |
scratch has been doing very well with her training seat sitting atop my toilet, in the manner it was supposed to be used. you see, at first, she was a bit apprehensive about the actual toilet seat being down, but she got used to it. she has just moved up to the next stage, and she is in there investigating the changes at this very moment. the first hole is now cut in the seat. are things getting exciting, or are things getting exciting? | | Sunday, November 13th, 2005 | | 10:23 pm |
it is sunday evening at about 1020 and i am pleased to report that while i was at work today, scratch used the training seat in its position on top of the toilet. i am so proud of her. | | 8:09 am |
Toilet training my beloved kitty.
it's been a real long while since i updated scratch's livejournal. the most recent thing was adding a new anigif icon for her, of her jumping to catch her toy mice on my bed like she likes to do. right now she is sitting on my window sill, which she has discovered she enjoys, but she has a hell of a time moving the blinds out of the way and jumping up onto the ledge simultaneously. i helped her out by holding the blinds back for her this time. anyway, the important issue is that this is going to be the start of my experiences toilet training scratch. on thursday, this product arrived that i ordered way early tuesday morning. see product here . after it arrived, i took it out of its packaging. scratch seemed vaguely receptive to it. i was feeling very hopeful. i took the "manual" if you will, and went to class. i read the included documentation on the bus. i'd have to wait to get home to get started. after class, i cleaned out her litter box, and put it out on my balcony, that way she wouldn't be able to just continue to use it whereever i moved it, nor would she be attempting to get into whereever i decided to hide it. then i took the training seat to the bathroom, filled it up with the litter that it required, and placed it in position on my toilet. the way it fits is that you lift the seat up, place the training seat down, then close the seat. where you would normally look down and see water, there is now a small section of kitty litter. the product claims it can support like 25 or 30 pounds of weight, and scratch is not even close to that heavy. i'm not all that concerned about her breaking through and falling in or anything. so i prepared the device, and went and retrieved the kitty, to try to situate her with her new set up. i just wanted to set her down on the toilet and let her kind of poke at it, you know? anyway, she was not a happy cat about this, got all scared and the claws came out as if i was putting her in a full bathtub or something. i decided we'd start a bit slower. i put the device on the floor where her box used to be. she used it that night, and all day yesterday. i figured if she was comfortable enough using it on the floor, she should be comfortable enough with it on the toilet. i moved it to the toilet, and it's been sort of a while. i'm kind of concerned for her. no accidents yet, but she seems a bit apprehensive about its current location. just in the time since i have come home from work, however, she has actually put her paws up on the toilet seat and kind of poked at it a bit, so i am only mildly concerned, i expect she won't have any problems. i think she should be ready to really get started here. if not, i'll probably have to spend the next week with the training seat back on my floor. i got her some kitty treats to try to assist in this whole training thing, you know, give her more of a reward than just affection, because i give her attention and affection all the time anyway, so i don't think that's all too much motivation. anyway, i went with this like salmon and shrimp flavor treat, and she was pretty uninterested. i am going to have to select a different flavors/styles until i come upon one she likes. to give you an overall outline of how this process works, i put this training seat with litter over the toilet. the seat has concentric circles going out from the middle, and each ring should take her about a week or two to complete. once she grows accustomed to using it in this location, and in this manner, and then i cut the first ring out of the seat. after she spends a week or two using it like this, i cut the next ring, and so on and so forth, eventually to when there is only 1 ring left. at that point, i will begin drastically reducing the amount of litter contained in the final ring, until there is no more litter, period. she should spend a little bit of time with a litterless final ring, before i remove it and the seat completely. once it reaches that point, that is that and she will be totally trained. so up to date: i have been trying to accustom her to using the training seat. she is ok with using it on the ground, and is a tiny bit hesitant to use it on the toilet, at the moment. | | Tuesday, February 1st, 2005 | | 2:47 am |
